The Deej - 5 months

Note: The measurements from this month are, again, done by me. I think I'm getting better at it, but I'm no medical professional, so take it for what it is.

How is our chunky monkey 5 months old?! I know he's still very little, but I find myself wondering where my baby went and where this little boy came from. When I read this in a year, I'm gonna laugh at that statement, but those of you who are moms will totally get what I mean. They really do grow up so fast. Here's what the Deej has been up to this month.

  • He is really proud of himself for starting solid foods. He's tried rice cereal (hates it), oatmeal cereal (likes it), pear (tolerates it), apple (hates it unless it's in oatmeal or if I'm letting him suck on the whole apple I'm eating), sweet potato (unsure about it), carrot (loves it), pea (hates it - can you blame him?), and whatever I'm eating that I'm willing to give him a little nibble of. He's a pretty messy eater, especially when he gets into a talkative let's-blow-raspberries mood in the middle of eating, but he (and I) are getting the hang of it.
  • He's been practicing drinking out of a cup. Not a sippy cup, a grown-up cup. He is obsessed with trying to get at mine when I'm using one, so I started putting just the teensiest bit of water in a cup just for him and helping him drink it. Kid's a natural at it - he only spills if I struggle with the pouring, and he loves it.
  • He has mastered the over-the-door jumper and would stay in there pretty much all day if I'd let him. He likes it so much that we can't get him to walk across the counter or bathtub anymore (remember we're holding him up, the kid can't actually walk, but don't tell him that) - he only wants to jump now.
  • Speaking of baths, do you know what's hilarious? Learning how to splash, especially when you time it so that Daddy's leaning over the side to start shampooing you? Every time!
  • He can roll over from front to back and back to front, but he chooses not to. If he doesn't want to do it, he won't. That is where my mom telling me, "I hope you have one just like you!" when I was being a brat seems to be haunting me.
  • He is this close to sitting on his own. His hold-ups are his feet (they are such fun toys to chew on) and wanting to stand up. If we can get him to not pay attention to either of those, he'll sit on his own, unsupported, if we put him there.
  • He is mobile. If we put him on his back, he'll arch his back so that his feet and head are the only things touching the ground. Then, he'll kick out his feet and push himself up. It looks ridiculous and can't be comfortable or efficient, but dang is he excited that he can move. I've got a video on Facebook, and if I ever figure out how (read: if I ever find the time, what between the moving and the mom-ing), I'll post it here.
  • He has also figured out how to be mobile on his tummy during tummy time. He has learned to rotate himself. Sure, he doesn't get far, but again, the fact that he can move at all is a big deal to him. Again, if I ever get around to it, I'll post a video of that, too.
  • He is loud when he talks. He used to talk quietly and throw syllables in there, but no more! He sticks to one sound and blurts it at the top of his lungs, starting mid-range then moving through high pitches and then back down to low, making noise until he is literally out of breath. He even makes those I'm-out-of-breath-but-will-keep-making-noise-as-long-as-I-can noises. Silly boy.
  • He is getting better at sleeping at night. We're able to eek out 7 or so hours at a time before he wakes up. My pediatrician told me I should start sleep training him so that he will go 12 hours, but I just don't have the heart to let him cry it out.
  • He loves to hold my hand, interlocking finger style, when he's nursing. Um, it's super cute, but I'm not going to show you because, well, he only does it when he's nursing, and that's a weird picture.
  • He's into touching faces lately. He likes to touch Deg's and my mouths the most, but he'll stroke your cheeks or squeeze your nose, too. He also likes to try to eat my hair.
  • He's finally figured out that the Moby wrap is not a form of torture, but a great way to get to hang out with Mom when she's doing stuff. He loves it when I go shopping (grocery or other) and stick him in there rather than the stroller or a shopping cart.
  • He has inherited one of my favorite stuffed animals, a little dog who Deg and I named Charles Barkley, and he loves that thing. I know it's weird, but I love that he loves this toy, probably because I love it so much. I think DJ and Charlie are going to be the bestest of friends.
  • Dude still loves music. "The Fox" is still number one in his book, and I have played it multiple times in the car when he's freaking out (still hates his car seat) and it immediately calms him down. He has been loving the Christmas music I've been blasting, especially the upbeat songs like "Jingle Bell Rock". He is his father's son and loves fast, upbeat music, including techno, which I have discovered as he jumps along like a maniac while I'm exercising and he tried to copy Amber while she was doing Zumba while at home for Thanksgiving. He is not a fan of being in the car when there's a slow song on the radio - fast songs, only!
This kid is an absolute joy and we just love the crap out of him. He is such a blessing.
