Followers of my life (via here, other blogs, and Facebook) will know that I've been making quilts for about 2 years. I really enjoy sending them to friends and relatives who have new babies and it's always fun for me to try a new technique with each one. Well, I've outdone myself on this one. Let's take a look-see, shall we?
| I started with the idea of a cute baby deer hanging out in the forest. So I got some heat and bond stuff and made appliques for the grass, the trees, the deer, and I was pretty excited about how this looked. Then, I tried to figure out what to put on the top of the quilt. I got stuck and took a quilt time-out for 2 or so months. |
| When I stopped pouting and got to thinking about what might go with what I already had, I decided to add a sunshine and some clouds. More heat and bond action! And then I got nervous that the heat and bond wouldn't stick, so I grabbed about 5 billion spools of thread and stitched the edges of every piece of applique down. |

So there's this amazing lady in our ward who owns a quilting machine. Yeah, owns, as in, this is in her basement. She was nice enough to let me come over to actually quilt the two sides and the batting together. Up to this point, I'd been BS-ing it with my sewing machine. So she set me up on her machine, and let me run it. It was terrifying and awesome at the same time. Seriously, that thing takes up her basement and sounds like an industrial power tool. |
| She then talked me into doing my own edging rather than using bias tape. Did it take a lot longer? Yes. Was it harder? Yes. Am I glad she talked me into it? Absolutely - I think it looks fantastic! Plus there's something just so satisfying about knowing that I freakin' MADE that crap. |

| I used minky fabric on the back. If you're a sewer at all, you know that mink fabric, while completely adorable, was made by the underworld when it comes to sewing. It stretches and bunches and is insane, but looks SO GREAT, thanks to the help of my friend and her quilting machine. Seriously, I'm over the moon about how this quilt turned out. It's just so adorable, and to know that it's a legit quilt and that I did it by myself is incredible. So it took me several months and lots of hours within those months - I'm feeling pretty darn good about it! Go me! |
