There's this website called The Beesley Project. It's a collection of a handful of really talented writers who have gotten together to do a doctrinal analysis of all the hymns in the English language version of the LDS hymn book. The Beesley Project is named after Ebeneezer Beesley, who composed 12 of the hymns. The idea is that, most of the time, we just go through the motions and sing the words without really thinking about what they mean. To quote the website, "We want to explore the hymns partly for our own benefit, but also to get the chance to share what we find with you so that "He that preacheth and he that receiveth understand one another, and both are edified and rejoice together" (D&C 50:22).
Well, it just so happens that they were looking for a few new writers. I asked if I could do an audition type post for them, which they allowed me to do. A few days later, I got an email from my contact there stating that they liked what they saw and that they would love for me to be a contributor. How cool is that!
I will be posting every Saturday, starting yesterday, with the exception of like 3 or 4 weeks, on various hymns in the LDS hymn book. My first post is here and I would love for you to read it. I love this blog here and everything it allows me to write about, but it's exciting to be involved in a specific writing project. Not only does it allow me to focus my writing, but it's going to add an element of spirituality to my life that I am pretty excited about. I have to admit that it makes me a little nervous because I'm in such incredible company with the other contributors, but I am so very excited for this new opportunity. Woo hoo!
