Guess where I spent the morning?

When I was 17, I spent a night in the ER because I had a bad reaction to sunflower seeds. It was horrendous and I have never felt anything remotely like that in my life. I thought I wasn't going to be able to breathe and it felt like an army of midgets was trying to work its way out of my GI track with ice picks. I have avoided sunflower seeds ever since, and have done a good job at staying away from the hospital... until today...

I don't know what I ate. It wasn't sunny seeds, that's for sure. Whatever it was, it made me experience "wannadie." By the time I got to work, I couldn't breathe very well and was turning red. One of the doctors told me to go to the ER right away and her nurse drove me over. Luckily. By the time I got there, I was beet red, sweating like I was running a marathon (I got handed a rag to wipe my face with), and got to run to the bathroom to have diarrhea and vomiting happen at the same exact time. Awesome. Well, Deg came and switched out my nurse friend. They finally admitted me, and I was in so much pain that I couldn't get undressed and into the hospital gown. Thank goodness for Deg. At this point, My whole body was as red as a fire engine and my lips were eggplant purple. I was having a bit of a time breathing and severe stomach cramps. The doctor and nurses were so great, and they were so good at taking care of me. I got hooked up to an IV drip with saline, Benadryl, Pepcid, and steroids. By the time the IV was ready to go in, I was shivering so bad I was afraid she wouldn't be able to stick me properly. She was excellent, though, and I was being medicated in no time. Y'all know what Benadryl does, right? I was asleep in like 5 minutes. Poor Deg. He just had to sit there and play on his Droid until the IV was done draining. It took almost 2 hours. Then, I got another check up, was given a prescription for steroids and some epi pens, told to go see an allergist ASAP, and sent on my way. I'm now sitting with my laptop on my bed, wishing I could go back to work because I feel just fine now. Don't worry, I'm staying put.

Today, I am grateful for a lot of things. I'm grateful for coworkers who are genuinely loving and caring and who helped me to get the help I needed. I'm grateful for modern medicine because I like being alive. I'm grateful for wonderful doctors and nurses who took such great care of me. I'm grateful for cell phones, so I could tell Deg to come sit with me. I'm grateful for insurance because that would be awful without it. And I'm grateful for the priesthood because I was able to get a blessing from my hubby that I know helped me and the staff at the hospital.

And here is a pic of me in the ER: How nice of Deg to capture the experience...

As I took the picture, I thought to myself, "Jessica will want to blog about this."
